Ina leabhar Sailing for Home, tá an méid seo le rá ag an scríbhneoir Theo Dorgan i Leith na teanga ‘the speaking of Irish forces us out of the language set of the boat. Irish has become an escape for Simon and me into a wider world’.

Sa chomhthéacs seo, airíonn an bheirt “taistealaithe” gur Gaeltacht bheag bhídeach iad féin agus an nasc cumarsáide atá eatarthu agus go bhfuil siad briste amach ó laincisí cúnga mhionstáit an Oileáin. Mar aon leis sin, tugann an Ghaeilge léargas agus tuiscint nua dóibh ar an saol.

Mar chuid den chomórtas Ciall, ba mhaith leis An Ghailearaí, Co. Dhún na nGall, go ndéanfadh físealaíontóirí iniúchadh ar an dearcadh seo agus iarrtar orthu machnamh agus scrúdú a dhéanamh ar na ceisteanna eile seo chomh maith:

• An bhuil íogaireacht nó ‘Ciall’ar leith ann a chuimsíonn aigne nó tuiscint Ghaeltachta?

• Má tá, cé mar a chuirtear in iúl é sin go cruthaitheach?

• An bhfuil ‘Ciall’nó íogaireacht na Gaeltachta le brath i saothar na bhfísealaíontóirí comhaimseartha nó an féidir é a chur in iúl trí mheán na healaíne ar chor ar bith?

Tá cúig ionad roghnaithe don chomórtas, áit ar féidir le físealaíontóír a s[h]aothar físealaíne a fhágáil chun go mbaileofar é i gcomhair an chomórtais. Is iad Dún na nGall, Baile Átha Cliath, Béal Feirste, Gaillimh agus Corcaigh na hionaid atá roghnaithe. Beidh fáil ar an fhoirm chlárúcháin agus ar na sonraí uilig a bhaineann leis an chomórtas nuair

a sheolfar an comórtas ar an 14 Eanair, 2011 ar 8in sa Culture Box, i mBarra an Teampaill, Baile Átha Cliath. Osclófar an taispeántas ar an 12 Márta, 2011. Is é deireadh mí Feabhra an spriocdháta.

Ciall translates as ‘sense’.

To quote Theo Dorgan from his book ‘Sailing for Home’ the speaking of Irish ‘forces us out of the language set of the boat. Irish has become an escape for Simon and me into a wider world’.

In this sense, together they felt they were the smallest Gaeltacht in the world which took them beyond the notion of a small island nation. Furthermore, it provides them with a different way of seeing, experiencing and understanding the world. An Gailearaí, Donegal, invites visual artists throughout Ireland to respond to the above and to consider the following:

• Is there a Gaeltacht sensibility?

• If so how is this expressed?

• Does a Gaeltacht sensibility inform the work of contemporary visual artists?

There will be 5 national pick-up and drop-off points: Donegal, Dublin, Belfast, Galway and Cork.
