Doirteadh Solais - Spilling Light

Doirteadh Solais

Caroline Harte, Cathal O Searcaigh, Brian O hUiginn.

Sé ‘Doirteadh Solais’ an taispeántas is deireannaí atá á eagrú ag An Ghailearaí. Is taispeántas é ina bhfaightear oibreacha leis an ealaíontóir chriadóireachta, Caroline Harte, leis an fhile, Cathal Ó Searcaigh, agus leis an cheoltóir, Brian Ó hUiginn i gcomhair lena chéile.

Rinne Caroline, arbh as Éirinn ó dhúchas í, staidéar ar an Ealaín Bhunúsach i gColáiste Réigiúnach Leitir Ceanainn i 1986 agus cónaíonn agus oibríonn sí i Londain anois. Choinnigh sí ceangal láidir le Dún na nGall, ag teacht ar ais go rialta, agus tagann an chuid is mó d’fhoinsí a cuid ealaíne as an áit. Chruthaigh Caroline sraith úr d’obair chriadóireachta go speisialta don taispeántas seo agus sé an dá phríomhthionchar a fheictear ar a cuid oibre ná filíocht Haiku Chathail Uí Shearcaigh agus tírdhreach Dhún na nGall. Tagann na píosaí criadóireachta i dhá fhoirm. Séard atá sa chéad fhoirm ná cruth rollta feadánach atá fada, caol, agus beagnach bán spreagtha ag crainn bheithe. Rinne Caroline féin stoc de chrann beithe a bhailiú agus a ghearrú suas lena thabhairt ar ais léi chuig a stiúideo i Londain. Is oibreacha fíneálta agus álainne iad na píosaí seo, tá gach ceann acu sainiúil, tá airde difriúil acu uilig agus tá Haiku Chathail greanta ar chuid acu. Baineann an dara foirm le clocha, atá beagnach bán, fosta, agus mar an gcéanna is oibreacha sainiúla iad a bhfuil méideanna ar leith acu. Bhailigh Caroline pionnaí giúise agus raithneach ón áit seo lena mbrú anuas ar na clocha. Tá na píosaí seo folamh taobh istigh rud a fhágann go bhfuil siad éadrom ach tá siad iontach go deo tadhlach agus iarrann siad a bheith láimhsithe, cosúil le  Cloch Imní (Worry Stone).

Ar taispeántas, fosta, tá grianghrafanna a bhfuil roinnt athruithe déanta orthu de thírdhreach ár bportaigh agus ‘Bratacha Paidre’ (Prayer Flags). Maithfear duit mura bhfuil fhios agat céard é Bratach Paidre ach is cinnte go bhfaca tú iad más rud é go dtug tú choíche cuairt ar Chathal sa bhaile. Thug sé leis ar ais ón Napóil iad i ndiaidh ceann dá chuid cuairteanna ansin agus gléasann siad a ghairdín anois! Tá bunús deasghnáthach leo agus séard atá iontu go bunúsach ná bratacha daite a bhfuil paidreacha scríofa orthu leis an intinn a dhíriú nuair a bhíonn duine ag guí. D’fhorbair Caroline an smaoineamh seo agus chruthaigh sí a leagan sainiúil féin le ghabháil leis an taispeántas.

Is mór agus is seasmhach an cuidiú a thugann Cathal Ó Searcaigh do Thionscnamh an Ghailearaí. Ní amháin go suíonn sé ar an phainéal roghnaithe bhliantúil ach bíonn sé iontach flaithiúil le hobair An Ghailearaí ar go leor bealaigh. In ainneoin chomh gnóthach is atá sé, mar shampla ag foscailt a dhráma úr, Oíche Ghealaí, go hoifigiúil in Amharclann an Ghrianán ar Aoine an 28 Meán Fómhair, déanfaidh sé roinnt dá chuid filíochta féin a chur i láthair ag foscailt an taispeántais seo an oíche dar gcionn, Dé Sathairn an 29 Meán Fómhair.

Baineann an tríú cuid den taispeántas seo le ceol Bhriain Uí Uiginn, ceol a chum sé go speisialta don ócáid. Is cumadóir agus ceoltóir é Brian atá ina cho-ordnóir i láthair na huaire ar ‘Foinn Chonallacha’, cúrsa sa cheol traidisiúnta atá lonnaithe ar an Fhál Charrach. Cuirfidh an ceol seo le blas na hoíche agus léireoidh sé obair Chathail agus Caroline ar aon. Is obair nuachruthaithe é a léireoidh nádúr traschultúrtha na rannpháirtithe, mar shampla beidh feadógaí ísle agus píobaí Seapánacha le fáil fite fuaite fríd an cheoil. Déanfar taifeadaithe d’obair Chathail agus Bhriain a chraoladh le linn an taispeántais ar eagla nach mbíonn tú ábalta a bheith i láthair don fhoscailt oifigiúil. Thar iomlán, tá comhoibriú cultúrtha lán fuinnimh agus ceannródaíoch le bheith ar siúl ar an Fhál Charrach agus tá fáilte roimh achan duine a bheith i láthair. Fosclaíonn an taispeántas Dé Sathairn, 29 Meán Fómhair ag 8.00 p.m. agus ritheann sé go dtí 30 Deireadh Fómhair.

Úna Campbell.

Spilling Light

Caroline Harte, Cathal O Searcaigh, Brian O hUiginn.

Spilling light is An Gaileari’s latest exhibition. It is a collaborative effort with input from ceramic artist Caroline Harte, poet Cathal O Searcaigh and musician Brian O hUiginn. Caroline, who hails from Ireland originally, studied Foundation Art in Letterkenny R.T.C. back in 1986 and now lives and works in London. She has just recently completed a BA Hons Degree at Camberwell school of Art. Caroline has maintained strong links with Donegal, visiting regularly, and most of the sources for her art come from here. Caroline has produced a new body of ceramics specially for this exhibition and the two main influences are Cathal O Searcaigh’s Haiku poetry and the Donegal landscape. The ceramic pieces come in two forms, the first is a tall, thin, barely white rolled tubular shape inspired by biirch trees. These are beautiful delicate works, each one is unique, they all vary in height and some have Cathal’s little Haiku encapsulations glazed onto them. The smaller pieces are hollow and therefore light but very tactile pieces begging to be handled, reminiscent of a Worry Stone, these are also in  an off white and again each one is an original, varying in size.

Also exhibited are manipulated photographs of our bog landscape and ‘Prayer Flags’. You will be forgiven for not knowing what a Prayer Flag is but you will have encountered them if you have ever visited Cathal at home. He brought them back from one of his visits to Nepal and they now festoon his garden. They have a ritual base are in essence coloured flags printed with prayers to help focus the mind whilst praying. Caroline has developed this idea and produced her own particular version to accompany the show.

Cathal O Searcaigh has shown tremendous and consistent support for the An Gaileari Project. Not alone does he sit on the annual selection panel, he is generous in many ways to the work of the Gallery. Yet despite the overwhelming call on his time he will present a live performance of his poetry at the opening of this exhibition the next night, Saturdaay 29th Sept.

The third component to this show is Brian O hUiginn’s music specially composed for the occasion. Brian. Whilst a composer and musician in his own right is currently co-ordinator for the ‘Fionn Chonallacha’, a traditional music course based in Falcarragh. The sound piece will serve to augment the flavour of the evening and illustrate Caroline and Cathal’s work. It is innovative work and will demonstrate the cross cultural nature of the participant’s influences and contributions, for instance we will have low whistles and Japanese pipes co-existing. Recordings of both Cathal’s and Brian’s work will run throughout the duration of the exhibition should you  not be able to make the opening night. All in all Falcarragh is set to experience an exciting and innovative cultural collaboration and everyone is welcome to attend. The exhibition opens on Saturday 29th September at 8pm and runs until 30th October.
